Challenges
The project involved a level of complexity due to the site’s existing electrical infrastructure, space constraints on the roof and in the electrical room. The center needed to have certain loads isolated for back power up purposes and the only way to do this was to upgrade an existing electrical panel with a larger capacity within the same space constraint. Existing voltages of Alliance did not match technology voltage specifications They also needed to have a seamless switch and communication between all technologies.
Simmitri’s Solution
Simmitri installed a transformer between the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the Main Switch Board. Transforming the voltage to a 480V Primary and a 208Y/120V secondary. The commercial BESS comes with an isolation contactor which works in conjunction with a SEL-751 relay, an advanced piece of technology that helps protect and control power systems. This equipment comes with an isolated enclosure that can sense the grid variation and can open and close the switch to rapidly put the system into microgrid mode in event of a utility grid failure. Finally we were able to work with the different technology manufacturers to achieve seamless communications between their devices.
